Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Bhubaneswar, is one of the oldest significant branch centres of world-wide Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, with its headquarters in Belur Math, West Bengal, India. Before being declared the capital of Orissa, the city of Bhubaneswar was a pilgrim centre dotted with numerous temples and surrounded by pristine forests of mango, teak and jackfruit trees. The temples of Bhubaneswar are unparalleled and noted for their exquisite architecture. It is said that more than a thousand temples existed in and around the town of which only about seventy have survived the ravages of time. The most important of them is, of course, the famous Lingaraja Temple that forms the core spiritual centre of the city even today.
Swami Brahmanandaji's idea took shape in the year 1917-18 when the land of the current Math site was acquired and construction began under the able supervision of Swami Sankarananda, later the seventh President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, who was also captivated by the sights and sounds of the temple city of Bhubaneswar. He used to say, "Bhubaneswar is the substance of my life. So many experiences of monastic life have been gained here". This statement sums up the importance of the Ramakrishna Math situated at Vivekananda Marg, Bhubaneswar.
The construction of the Math work was completed and it was consecrated to the State by Swami Brahmananda himself on 31St October 1919. For those who wondered aloud at the need for this huge Math complex at an obscure corner of the then small hamlet like town of Bhubaneswar, Raja Maharaj uttered these prophetic words, "Bhubaneswar will one day be the centre of Orissa. This Math will cater to the needs of thousands of devotees who will throng to this place hungering for spiritual fulfillment." True to his words Bhubaneswar was declared the Capital of Orissa in the year 1948 and the Math is today a landmark visited by thousands of devotees and spiritual seekers being an oasis of peace amidst the tension and strife filled life of the city. It also attracts the youth who seek to improve their knowledge base and become contributing members of the society, state and nation as per the vision of Swami Vivekananda.
In addition to the upgradation of the school and expansion of dispensary and library a mobile rural Health unit was introduced in the year 1992 to cater to the medical needs of the surrounding villages. A students' home for tribal students has been functioning in the Mission campus since 1994. Sixty tribal students pursuing their studies in the local schools have been accommodated here with boarding, lodging and tuition provided for free. A multi-purpose well-furnished hall, named Vivekananda Hall, with a capacity of 600 seats has been constructed recently for holding public meetings, spiritual retreats etc. While the Students' Home was inaugurated by Srimat Swami Atmsthanandaji Maharaj, Vice-President, in December 1994, the hall was inaugurated on 26 January 2001 by Srimat Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, the current President and the then Vice-President of the Order. |
